1842年から1844年頃、フレデリック・ショパンが32歳から34歳の時期に書いた《2つのノクターン Op.55》は、第1曲 ヘ短調と第2曲 変ホ長調からなる作品で、ジェーン・スターリング（Jane Wilhelmina Stirling, 1804–1859）に献呈されました。

スターリングは、スコットランド出身の女性で、1840年代にショパンからピアノの指導を受けた人物です。ショパンの音楽を深く尊敬し、その活動を支えた人物の一人として知られています。

ショパンとの関係については、恋愛感情があったのではないかと語られることもあります。しかし、それを裏付ける確かな史料はなく、推測の域を出ないものとされています。二人の間に確認できるのは、音楽を通じた師弟関係と、長年にわたる交流でした。

この自筆譜は、出版に向けて整えられた自筆原稿（Autograf edycyjny）として残されています。装飾音や表現に関する細かな指示、出版に向けた修正の跡も残されており、ショパン自身の手によって作品がどのように仕上げられていったのか、その過程を伝えています。

ノクターン（夜想曲）は、19世紀初頭に生まれたピアノ小品のジャンルで、歌うような旋律や静かな情緒を特徴としています。アイルランド出身の作曲家ジョン・フィールドによって確立されたこの形式を、ショパンはさらに自由で豊かな表現へと広げました。

第1曲 ヘ短調では、静かに始まる旋律が、少しずつ表情を変えながら展開していきます。深い陰影を持つ旋律と、細やかな音の動きの中に、ショパンのノクターンならではの繊細な表現を感じることができる作品ではないでしょうか。

1844年7月、この自筆原稿はライプツィヒの出版社 Breitkopf & Härtel へ送られました。同社は当時、ヨーロッパを代表する音楽出版社のひとつで、多くの作曲家の作品を世に送り出していました。
ショパン自身の筆跡と、出版へ向けた細かな書き込みが残るこの自筆譜は、《ノクターン ヘ短調 Op.55, No.1》が出版へ向かう過程を伝える重要な資料でもあります。


Composed around 1842–1844, when Frédéric Chopin was between the ages of 32 and 34, Two Nocturnes, Op. 55 consists of two pieces: the first in F minor and the second in E-flat major. The work was dedicated to Jane Wilhelmina Stirling (1804–1859).

Stirling was a Scottish woman who received piano instruction from Chopin in the 1840s. She deeply admired Chopin’s music and is known as one of the people who supported his artistic activities.

Their relationship has sometimes been discussed in terms of possible romantic feelings. However, there are no reliable historical sources to support such claims, and they remain within the realm of speculation. What can be confirmed is their long-standing relationship through music, as teacher and student.

This manuscript survives as an Autograf edycyjny—an autograph manuscript prepared for publication. It contains detailed markings concerning ornaments and expression, as well as revisions made in preparation for printing, revealing the process by which Chopin refined the work in his own hand.

The nocturne is a genre of short piano pieces that emerged in the early 19th century, characterized by lyrical melodies and a quiet, expressive atmosphere. Established by the Irish composer John Field, this form was further expanded by Chopin into a more free and richly expressive musical language.

In the first movement, Nocturne in F minor, the melody begins quietly and gradually unfolds with changing expressions. Through its deeply shaded lyricism and delicate movement of sound, the work reveals the refined sensitivity that characterizes Chopin’s nocturnes.

In July 1844, this autograph manuscript was sent to the Leipzig publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel, one of the leading music publishers in Europe at the time, responsible for bringing the works of many composers to the public.

With Chopin’s own handwriting and the detailed annotations made for publication, this autograph manuscript offers a valuable glimpse into the journey of Nocturne in F minor, Op. 55, No. 1 as it moved toward publication.
