ロベルト・シューマンの妻として広く知られるクララ・シューマンは、19世紀において最も高名なピアニストの一人です。

1853年は、クララ・シューマンにとって重要な出来事が重なった年でした。ヴァイオリニストのヨーゼフ・ヨアヒムとの共演を重ねるなど演奏活動と創作を続けるなかで、9月には20歳のヨハネス・ブラームスがシューマン家を訪れています。8人の子どもを育てながら家庭を支える生活も並行して続いていました。ロベルト・シューマンの体調にも不安定さが見られはじめていた時期でもありました。その10月に完成したのが、《3つのロマンス》Op.22です。

作品はヴァイオリニストのヨーゼフ・ヨアヒムに献呈されました。当時のヨアヒムはすでにヨーロッパ各地で注目を集めるヴァイオリニストとして活動しており、クララ・シューマンおよびロベルト・シューマンとの音楽的な関係を築いていました。

第1曲「Andante molto」は、静かな流れの中でヴァイオリンとピアノが旋律を受け渡していく作品です。ピアノが静かに和音を奏で、その上にヴァイオリンが旋律を重ねていく様子は、まさに音楽的な会話のようです。二つの楽器は互いに響きを支え合いながら進み、室内楽としての均衡のなかで関係を変えていきます。


Clara Schumann (1819–1896) is widely known as the wife of Robert Schumann, and she was one of the most highly regarded pianists of the 19th century.

The year 1853 was marked by a concentration of significant events in Clara Schumann’s life. While continuing her performing career and compositional work, including frequent collaborations with the violinist Joseph Joachim, she also met the 20-year-old Johannes Brahms, who visited the Schumann household in September. At the same time, she was raising eight children and managing the demands of family life. Robert Schumann’s health was also beginning to show signs of instability during this period. It was in October of that year that the Drei Romanzen, Op. 22, were completed.

The work was dedicated to the violinist Joseph Joachim, who was already gaining recognition across Europe as an outstanding virtuoso and had established close musical relationships with both Clara and Robert Schumann.

The first movement, “Andante molto,” unfolds in a quiet flow, in which violin and piano exchange melodic lines. The piano provides a gently sustained harmonic foundation, over which the violin unfolds its melody, creating what feels like a musical conversation. The two instruments support one another as they proceed, shaping their relationship within the balance of chamber music texture.
