一方で、この作品をめぐる記録には、もう一つの異なる流れも見られます。ロベルトへの贈り物となる約二ヶ月前、1855年4月2日の日付を持つ、本作に関連する別の自筆資料がヨハネス・ブラームスへ贈られていたことが知られています。さらに、翌1856年の出版に際しては、献呈先としてブラームスの名が記されることとなりました。

私的な祝辞として届けられたロベルトへの譜面と、出版という形をとったブラームスへの献呈。こうした複数の日付や関係性を、ひとつの単純な物語として結びつけることはできません。ただ、そこに重なっているのは、夫への思いと、若き音楽家との音楽的な結びつき、そして作曲家としての歩みが、同じ時間のなかに共存していたことを静かに物語る自筆資料でもあります。

ただ、この自筆譜には、1855年6月8日という一日と、ロベルトに向けて筆が運ばれたという記録が残されています。整えられた五線と音符、加えて短い献辞。その静かな筆致は、時を越えてなお、ただ一人へと向けられた音楽の気配を鮮やかに伝えています。


This autograph manuscript is the dedicatory manuscript of Clara Schumann’s Romance No. 1, Op. 21, presented to her husband, Robert Schumann. On the cover appears the following inscription in Clara’s own hand:
“Dem geliebten Manne am 8ten Juni 1855 seine Klara”
(“To my beloved husband, June 8th, 1855 — your Klara”)

The date coincides with Robert Schumann’s 45th birthday, during the period in which he was staying at the sanatorium in Endenich. Unable to meet him freely at the time, Clara may have prepared this manuscript as a quiet gift. Through the medium of music, the dedication seems to preserve emotions that could not easily be expressed in words. The handwritten notes and brief inscription quietly suggest a connection maintained across distance and separation.

At the same time, another historical context also surrounds this work. About two months earlier, on April 2nd, 1855, another autograph manuscript related to the same composition is known to have been presented to Johannes Brahms. Furthermore, when the work was published in 1856, Brahms was named as its dedicatee.

The manuscript privately sent to Robert and the later published dedication to Brahms cannot easily be reduced to a single narrative. What remains visible instead is the coexistence of several relationships within the same period of Clara Schumann’s life: devotion to her husband, a close musical connection with the young Brahms, and her continuing path as a composer.

This manuscript preserves the tangible trace of a work prepared on a specific day, June 8th, 1855, with the pen directed toward Robert. The carefully ordered staves, the handwritten notes, and the brief dedication continue to convey, across the passage of time, the vivid presence of music written for a single recipient.
