ロベルトへ贈られたこの自筆譜とは別に、同作品の別の日付をもつ自筆譜が存在しています。それは、ロベルトの45歳の誕生日より約2か月前にあたる1855年4月2日の日付が記されたもので、ヨハネス・ブラームスへ贈られていたことが知られています。さらに翌1856年、作品が出版された際には、献呈先としてブラームスの名が記されました。

私的な贈り物としてロベルトへ向けて記された自筆譜と、公刊作品としてブラームスへ献呈された作品。この二つを単純な物語として結びつけることはできません。しかしそこには、夫への深い思い、若きブラームスとの音楽的な結びつき、そして一人の作曲家として歩み続けたクララの姿が、同じ時間の中に静かに重なっています。

それでも、この自筆譜には、1855年6月8日という一日と、ロベルトへ向けて筆が運ばれたという確かな記録が残されています。整えられた五線と音符、そして短い献辞。その静かな筆致は、時を越えた今なお、ただ一人へと向けられた音楽の気配を鮮やかに伝えています。


This autograph manuscript is the dedicatory manuscript of Clara Schumann’s Romance No. 1, Op. 21, presented to Robert Schumann on the occasion of his forty-fifth birthday. On the cover appears the following inscription in Clara’s own hand:

“Dem geliebten Manne am 8ten Juni 1855 seine Klara”
(“To my beloved husband, June 8th, 1855 — your Klara”)

The date marks Robert Schumann’s forty-fifth birthday. At the time, he was staying at the sanatorium in Endenich, and the couple were living through a period in which they could not meet freely. Clara may have prepared this manuscript as a quiet gift. Through the language of music, the dedication seems to preserve emotions that could not easily be expressed in words. The handwritten notes and brief inscription quietly reconnect two lives that remained bound together despite physical separation.

There is, however, another noteworthy fact surrounding this work.

Separate from the manuscript presented to Robert, another autograph manuscript of the same work bearing a different date also exists. It bears the date of April 2nd, 1855—approximately two months before Robert’s forty-fifth birthday—and is known to have been presented to Johannes Brahms. Furthermore, when the work was published in 1856, Brahms was named as its dedicatee.

The manuscript privately prepared for Robert and the published work dedicated to Brahms cannot easily be reduced to a single narrative. Rather, they reveal the coexistence of several strands in Clara Schumann’s life: her devotion to her husband, her profound musical relationship with the young Brahms, and her continuing path as a composer.

This manuscript preserves the tangible trace of a work prepared on June 8th, 1855, with the pen directed toward Robert. The carefully ruled staves, the handwritten notes, and the brief dedication continue to convey, across the passage of time, the quiet yet unmistakable presence of music written for one beloved recipient.
