「交響曲の父」と呼ばれる Joseph Haydn の交響曲第101番、通称《時計》は、1794年にロンドンで書き上げられた作品です。
この交響曲は特に第2楽章 Andante が広く知られており、聴衆を魅了するユーモラスなリズムが印象的です。

楽章全体を通して刻まれる規則的な伴奏のリズムは、まるで時計の振り子のように響きます。この特徴から、後に《時計》という愛称で親しまれるようになりました。

Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 101, widely known as “The Clock,” was composed in London in 1794. Among its movements, the second movement, Andante, is especially celebrated for its charming and humorous rhythmic character.

Throughout the movement, the steady accompanying rhythm evokes the motion of a clock’s pendulum. It was from this distinctive musical gesture that the symphony later acquired its popular nickname, “The Clock.”
