『海の嵐』は、ヴィヴァルディの協奏曲集《和声と創意の試み》（Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione）の第5曲にあたる作品です。

この協奏曲集は全12曲から構成され、第1曲から第4曲が「四季」として広く知られています。その次に位置する第5曲が、この『海の嵐』（La tempesta di mare）です。

このタイトルはヴィヴァルディ本人が名付けたとされており、嵐の海の情景を鮮やかに描写しています。特に第1楽章のプレストでは、16分音符の音階やアルペッジョ、跳躍する音程を用いて、嵐の激しさが生き生きと表現されています。

また、ヴィヴァルディは「海の嵐」という標題をフルート協奏曲（作品10-1）にも用いており、このテーマを音楽で描写することを好んでいたことが窺えます。

所蔵機関の資料によれば、今回の自筆譜資料はヴィヴァルディの協奏曲 RV 253の演奏用パート譜で、「vl」「strings」「woodwinds」「bc」など、楽器ごとのパートに分類されています。これらの手稿には、当時の演奏のために準備された音楽の姿が残されており、ヴィヴァルディの作品が実際に音として立ち上がる過程を伝える貴重な資料です。


A Storm at Sea

“La tempesta di mare” (“The Storm at Sea”) is the fifth concerto from Vivaldi’s collection Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention).

This collection consists of twelve concertos, with the first four widely known as The Four Seasons. Following these celebrated works, the fifth concerto is La tempesta di mare.

The title is believed to have been named by Vivaldi himself, vividly portraying the scene of a stormy sea. In particular, the first movement, Presto, captures the intensity of the storm through rapid sixteenth-note scales, arpeggios, and wide melodic leaps.

Vivaldi also used the title “La tempesta di mare” for his Flute Concerto in F major, Op. 10, No. 1, suggesting his particular interest in expressing the power and imagery of nature through music.

According to the catalog information of the holding institution, this manuscript material consists of performance parts for Vivaldi’s concerto RV 253, organized into individual sections such as “vl,” “strings,” “woodwinds,” and “basso continuo.” These handwritten parts preserve the musical form prepared for performance at the time, offering a valuable glimpse into how Vivaldi’s music was brought to life in performance.
