ヨハン・セバスティアン・バッハが1720年頃に作曲した《無伴奏ヴァイオリンのためのソナタとパルティータ》（BWV 1001–1006）は、3つのソナタと3つのパルティータから成る全6曲の作品集です。独奏ヴァイオリンのレパートリーの中でも特に重要な位置を占めるこの作品群は、技巧と音楽性の両面で極めて高い完成度を誇り、今日に至るまで多くの演奏家と聴衆に親しまれています。

《パルティータ第3番 ホ長調 BWV 1006》は、前奏曲に続く6つの舞曲から成る全7楽章の構成です。その第3楽章「ガヴォット・アン・ロンド（ロンド風ガヴォット）」は、明るく親しみやすい旋律と軽快なリズムが魅力で、単独でも頻繁に演奏される人気の楽章となっています。（なお、伝統的にメヌエット I と II を一対と見なすことから、全体を6つの舞曲として数える場合もあります。）

この曲が生まれたのは、バッハが中部ドイツ、現在のザクセン＝アンハルト州に位置する小都市ケーテン（Köthen）の宮廷楽長を務めていた時期にあたります。ケーテン宮廷はカルヴァン派で、壮麗な教会音楽を必要としなかったことから、バッハは宗教作品よりも器楽作品の創作に力を注ぐことができました。この時期には、《無伴奏チェロ組曲》や《ブランデンブルク協奏曲》なども作曲され、バッハの器楽作品が数多く生み出された重要な時期となりました。

「ガヴォット・アン・ロンド」の自筆譜に目を向けると、約300年前にバッハが音楽と静かに向き合い、一音一音を紙の上に刻みつけていった時間が、そっと立ち上がってくるようです。整った筆致には、音の流れと構造への精緻な配慮がにじみ出ており、その譜面からは、バッハの深い音楽的思索の軌跡が読み取れます。

Composed around 1720, Johann Sebastian Bach's Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (BWV 1001–1006) stand among the greatest achievements in the violin repertoire. Consisting of three sonatas and three partitas, this remarkable collection unites technical brilliance with profound musical expression, and continues to inspire performers and audiences around the world.

Partita No. 3 in E major, BWV 1006, consists of a Prelude followed by a sequence of dance movements. The third movement, Gavotte en Rondeau, is especially admired for its bright and engaging melody and lively rhythm, and is frequently performed as an independent concert piece. Although the work is commonly described as having seven movements, the paired Menuets are sometimes regarded as a single dance, leading some traditions to count six dance movements.

The Partita was composed during Bach's years at the court of Köthen, in present-day Saxony-Anhalt, where he served as Kapellmeister. Because the Calvinist court required relatively little elaborate church music, Bach was able to devote much of his creative energy to instrumental composition. During this important period, he also composed such enduring masterpieces as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Suites for Solo Cello.

Viewed today, the autograph manuscript of Gavotte en Rondeau offers more than the notes themselves. Bach's remarkably clear and disciplined handwriting reveals meticulous attention to musical structure and flow. Across nearly three centuries, the manuscript preserves not only the music, but also the trace of Bach's hand at work.
