エクトル・ベルリオーズ（1803–1869）が1845年7月26日、リヨンの地で記したこの自筆の楽譜は、19世紀の音楽愛好家の間で大切にされていたアルバムリーフ（記念帳への書き込み）の一つです。
一葉の表面には「Petite melodie, Lento（ささやかなメロディ、ゆるやかに）」と記された、ピアノのための穏やかな旋律が書かれ、裏面にはベルリオーズの代表作として知られる『幻想交響曲』第2楽章「舞踏会（Un bal）」の旋律の一節が記されています。

当時、音楽家が友人や知人の記念帳にその場で短い楽曲を書き留めることは、親愛の情を示す特別な贈り物でもありました。大規模なオーケストラ作品で名声を築いたベルリオーズが、限られた紙面の中に何を書き残したのか。その筆致には、公の場で見せる華やかな音楽家としての横顔とはまた異なる、穏やかな表情がうかがえるようです。

即興的小品に加え、裏面に『幻想交響曲』という誰もが知る名曲の旋律をあえて添えたことからも、このアルバムの所有者がベルリオーズにとってどのような存在であったのか、あるいはベルリオーズ自身がこの贈り物にどのような想いを込めたのか、静かな想像を誘います。

This autograph manuscript, written by Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) in Lyon on July 26, 1845, is one example of the album leaves that were cherished among music lovers during the nineteenth century.

On the recto appears a gentle piano melody inscribed “Petite melodie, Lento”; on the verso is a passage from “Un bal,” the second movement of Berlioz’s celebrated Symphonie fantastique.

At the time, it was common for musicians to write short musical passages directly into the albums of friends, admirers, or acquaintances as personal keepsakes and gestures of affection. Within this limited space, Berlioz — renowned for his large-scale orchestral works — left behind something remarkably intimate. His handwriting seems to reveal a quieter and more private side than the dramatic public image often associated with the composer.

Alongside this improvisatory little piece, Berlioz also chose to include a melody from Symphonie fantastique, one of his most recognizable works. The decision quietly invites the viewer to imagine what this album may have meant to its original owner, and what thoughts or sentiments Berlioz himself may have carried into this small musical offering.

This giclée print carefully preserves the subtle pressure of Berlioz’s pen, as well as the intimate scale of the original manuscript, measuring approximately 13 × 20 cm. It offers a chance to experience, at close range, a fleeting moment captured in the composer’s own hand.
