エクトル・ベルリオーズ（1803–1869）が1845年7月26日、リヨンの地で記したこの自筆の楽譜は、19世紀の音楽愛好家の間で親しまれていた「アルバムリーフ」の一つです。

19世紀ヨーロッパでは、音楽家が友人や知人の記念帳に、自筆の詩や短い旋律を書き添える文化がありました。現代のサイン帳や芳名録を、より親密で特別なものにしたような存在でしょうか。こうした紙葉は「アルバムリーフ」と呼ばれ、音楽家からファンや知人への記帳、あるいは贈呈という形で記され、大切に残されてきました。

この一葉にも、そうした私的で穏やかな時間が静かに刻まれています。

表面には「Petite melodie, Lento（ささやかなメロディ、ゆるやかに）」と記された、ピアノのための即興的小品が書かれ、裏面にはベルリオーズの代表作《幻想交響曲》第2楽章〈Un bal（舞踏会）〉の有名な旋律の一節が記されています。

大規模なオーケストラ作品で知られるベルリオーズが、この小さな紙葉の中に何を書き残したのか。その筆致からは、劇的な音楽世界で知られる作曲家とは少し異なる、静かで親密な表情がうかがえるようです。

また、裏面に《幻想交響曲》の旋律をあえて添えていることも興味深く、このアルバムの持ち主がベルリオーズにとってどのような存在だったのか、あるいは彼自身がこの贈り物にどのような想いを込めたのか、自然と想像を誘います。

This autograph manuscript, written by Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) in Lyon on July 26, 1845, is an example of an “album leaf,” a form cherished among music lovers during the nineteenth century.

At the time, there was a custom in which musicians would write short poems, musical phrases, or personal inscriptions into the albums of friends and acquaintances. Perhaps they may be thought of as a more intimate and special version of modern autograph books or guestbooks. Such individual sheets became known as “album leaves,” and were preserved as treasured keepsakes — written for admirers, friends, or as personal gifts from the musicians themselves.

This particular leaf quietly preserves such a private and gentle moment.

On the recto appears an improvisatory little piece for piano inscribed “Petite melodie, Lento” (“a gentle little melody, slowly”), while the verso contains a passage from the second movement, “Un bal,” of Berlioz’s celebrated Symphonie fantastique.

Renowned for his large-scale orchestral works, Berlioz here left behind something remarkably intimate within this small sheet of paper. His handwriting seems to reveal a quieter and more personal side than the dramatic musical world often associated with the composer.

It is also intriguing that he chose to include a melody from Symphonie fantastique on the reverse side. The gesture naturally invites the imagination to wonder what this album may have meant to its original owner, and what sentiments Berlioz himself may have carried into this small musical offering.

This giclée print carefully preserves not only the movement of the ink and the subtle pressure of Berlioz’s pen, but also the intimate scale of the original leaf, measuring approximately 13 × 20 cm. Beyond the printed notes themselves, it offers a quiet glimpse into a fleeting moment captured by the composer’s own hand.
