1835年、ショパンが20代半ば、パリのサロン文化の中で活躍していた時期に書かれたのが、この《ノクターン第8番》です。本作品は、当時パリに駐在していたオーストリア大使のアポニー伯爵夫人に献呈されました。夫人が主催するサロンは、当時のパリでもよく知られた文化的社交の場のひとつであり、ショパンにとっても自身の芸術を分かち合う大切な場であったといえるのではないでしょうか。

この自筆譜には、左上に記された「No 2.」の文字の下に、ショパン自身の筆致による「Lento sostenuto（緩やかに、持続して）」という速度標語と、付点四分音符＝50というテンポ指定が克明に残されています。これらは、ショパンがこの曲に込めた音楽的な息遣いそのものを知るための、貴重な手掛かりといえると思います。

Composed in 1835, when Chopin was in his mid-twenties and active within the salon culture of Paris, Nocturne No. 8 remains one of his most celebrated works. The piece was dedicated to Countess d’Appony, wife of the Austrian ambassador stationed in Paris at the time. Her salon was known as one of the city’s notable cultural gathering places, and may well have been among the settings in which Chopin shared his music and artistry.

In this autograph manuscript, beneath the “No 2.” written at the upper left, Chopin’s own hand clearly records the tempo indication Lento sostenuto along with a metronome marking of dotted quarter note = 50. These markings offer valuable insight into the sense of pacing and musical breathing he envisioned for the work.

This manuscript was sent to the publisher as a master copy for engraving and publication. The score contains corrections, additions, and annotations related to the engraving process, preserving traces of the work as it moved toward its printed form.

Chopin’s autograph manuscripts often reveal careful adjustments not only to the notes themselves, but also to slurs, ornaments, and phrasing. In this score as well, one can sense his delicate attention to melodic flow and resonance.
