《ショパンの息づかいが聞こえる──貴重な自筆譜草稿より》

ショパンがフランスのノアンで静かな創作の日々を過ごしていた1843〜1844年頃に生まれた、やさしくゆったりとした音楽《Berceuse（子守歌）》。

この曲は、左手が静かに繰り返す伴奏の上に、右手がきらめくような変奏を重ねていくという、とても独特なスタイルでできています。

同じ和声進行の上に、右手のメロディだけが少しずつ形を変えていく構造は、まるで子守唄がゆるやかに揺れながら、夢のなかへ導いていくようです。

全体としては穏やかで静かな曲調ですが、その中にはさりげない技巧と洗練が凝縮されています。華麗なエチュードや情熱的なポロネーズとは対照的に、『声にならない言葉』で語るような、ショパン円熟期の内面的な深さを感じさせる作品です。

この《Berceuse》には、ノアンで過ごした穏やかな時間をめぐる美しい逸話も残されています。

当時ショパンの親しい友人であった歌手ポーリーヌ・ヴィアルド＝ガルシアの幼い娘ルイーズ・ヴィアルド（Louise Héritte-Viardot）の姿から、この夢見るような音楽の着想を得たのではないか、と伝えられています。これは確実な史実として確認されたものではありませんが、静かに揺れる旋律と優しい変奏は、幼い生命を見つめるような温かさに満ちています。

なお、この作品は後にショパンの弟子であったエリーズ・ガヴァール（Élise Gavard）へ献呈されました。

今回ご紹介するのは、完成された清書譜ではなく、ショパン自身の手による貴重な自筆譜草稿です。この草稿には冒頭の2小節が含まれていませんが、作品全体の構想が記され、いくつもの数小節単位の断片が番号付きで並べられています。そこには、ショパンが楽想を練り、少しずつ音楽を形にしていく過程が刻まれています。

五線紙にはインクのしみやペンの試し書きも残されていて、まるでショパンが五線紙に向かってペンを走らせる姿が浮かんでくるようです。

清書譜とは異なる、草稿ならではの息づかい。

この草稿は、ポーリーヌ・ヴィアルド＝ガルシアの所有を経た後、マルセル・モーポワからアルフレッド・コルトーへと受け継がれました。ショパン研究と演奏の歴史に深く関わったコルトーのコレクションに含まれていたことも、この自筆譜が歩んできた特別な歴史を物語っています。

《Tracing Chopin’s Creative Breath — From a Rare Autograph Draft Manuscript》

Written during Chopin’s quiet years of creation at Nohant in France, around 1843–1844, the 《Berceuse》 (Lullaby) is one of his most tender and intimate works.

The piece is built upon a remarkably original structure: a gently repeating accompaniment in the left hand provides a calm foundation, while the right hand unfolds a series of delicate and luminous variations above it.

As the melody gradually changes its form over the same harmonic progression, the music seems to sway softly like a lullaby, carrying the listener into a world of dreams.

Although serene and seemingly simple in character, the work contains extraordinary refinement and subtle artistry. Unlike the stormy brilliance of his Études or the passionate intensity of his Polonaises, the 《Berceuse》 reveals a deeply personal side of Chopin’s mature style — as if expressing emotions through “words that cannot be spoken.”

A beautiful story is also associated with this work and Chopin’s peaceful days at Nohant.

It has been suggested that the presence of Louise Héritte-Viardot, the young daughter of the singer Pauline Viardot-García, who was close to Chopin’s circle, may have inspired the dreamlike atmosphere of this music. Although this cannot be confirmed as a documented historical fact, the gentle rocking motion and tender variations of the 《Berceuse》 seem to reflect the innocence and warmth of childhood itself.

The work was later dedicated to Élise Gavard, one of Chopin’s pupils.

The manuscript presented here is not a finished fair copy, but a precious autograph draft written by Chopin himself.

The draft lacks the opening two measures, yet it preserves the overall conception of the work, with numerous numbered sequences of several measures arranged across the pages. These fragments reveal the process through which Chopin shaped and refined his musical ideas.

Ink stains and pen trials remain on the paper, allowing us almost to imagine Chopin seated before the manuscript, searching for the perfect expression of sound.

Unlike a completed score, this draft carries the unique breath of creation itself. It offers a rare opportunity to stand close to the moment when an artist was still thinking, exploring, and bringing music into being.

This manuscript once belonged to Pauline Viardot-García, before passing through Marcel Maupois and eventually becoming part of the collection of Alfred Cortot, the renowned pianist and Chopin scholar. Its journey through the hands of those who devoted their lives to Chopin’s music adds another layer to its remarkable history.
