この譜は、J. S. バッハ自身の手によって書かれた自筆総譜で、《ロ短調ミサ曲》の冒頭を飾る「Kyrie eleison（主よ、憐れみたまえ）」の一葉です。

《ロ短調ミサ曲》の成立には、長い時間が流れています。
1733年、バッハはまず「Kyrie」と「Gloria」からなるミサ曲を作曲しました。それから十数年後、晩年のバッハはこの作品に「Credo」「Sanctus」「Benedictus」「Agnus Dei」などを加え、壮大なミサ曲として完成させます。
そのため、現在残されている自筆総譜には、1733年に書かれた部分と、1748～1749年頃に書かれた部分が共存しています。一つの作品の中に、異なる時代に書かれたバッハの筆跡が残されているのです。

音符の配置、筆の勢い、書き直しや修正の跡。そこには、音楽を聴くだけでは触れることのできない、作曲家の手の動きそのものが刻まれています。
この自筆総譜は、現在、ベルリン州立図書館に所蔵されています。2015年には、バッハの音楽的遺産を伝える極めて重要な資料として、ユネスコ「世界の記憶」に登録されました。

A Mass That Begins in Bach’s Own Hand

“Lord, have mercy.”

Bach’s Mass in B minor, BWV 232, is widely regarded as one of the greatest works in the history of classical music. Its monumental choruses, arias filled with profound prayer, intricate counterpoint, and extraordinary variety of musical styles come together in a single work that represents the culmination of Bach’s lifelong musical achievement. It has often been described as his musical testament.

This leaf comes from the autograph manuscript written in J. S. Bach’s own hand. It is the opening leaf of the Mass in B minor, bearing the words “Kyrie eleison” (“Lord, have mercy”).

The Mass in B minor took shape over a long period of time.

In 1733, Bach first composed a Mass consisting of the Kyrie and Gloria. More than a decade later, in the final years of his life, he returned to the work and added movements including the Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei, bringing the Mass to its monumental final form.

As a result, the surviving autograph score contains sections written in different periods: some dating from 1733, and others from around 1748–1749.

Within a single work, the handwriting of Bach from different periods of his life remains side by side.

The placement of the notes, the movement of the pen, the traces of revisions and corrections—these preserve something that cannot be experienced through sound alone: the very movement of the composer’s hand as he set the music onto paper.

This autograph score is now held by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. In 2015, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in recognition of its exceptional significance as part of Bach’s musical heritage.
