1846年に制作されたこの作品は、19世紀を代表するピアニスト、フランツ・リストの邸宅で開かれた音楽の集い「マチネー（昼の演奏会やサロン）」の一場面を伝えています。

リストの周囲を囲むのは、当時の音楽界を牽引した巨星たち。左から作者クリーフーバー自身、作曲家ベルリオーズ、リストの師であるツェルニー、そして"パガニーニの後継者"と呼ばれたヴァイオリニストのエルンスト。

特筆すべきは、リストが奏でる楽譜が、ツェルニーの師であるベートーヴェンの《ピアノ・ソナタ第12番 Op.26》である点です。ベートーヴェン、ツェルニー、リストという師弟の系譜が一本の線で繋がる瞬間を、クリーフーバーは見事に描き出しました。形式張らない自由な空気の中で、才能と情熱が響きあう当時のサロン文化を今に伝える、きわめて貴重な歴史的記録です。

Description
This 1846 lithograph by Josef Kriehuber captures an intimate "matinee"—a private musical gathering—at the home of the legendary Franz Liszt. Surrounded by the cultural elite of the nineteenth century, Liszt sits at the piano as the magnetic center of the scene.

From left to right, we see the artist Kriehuber himself, followed by the composer Hector Berlioz, Liszt’s mentor Carl Czerny, and the celebrated violinist Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst. A particularly symbolic detail is the sheet music on the piano: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 12, Op. 26. This selection subtly honors the lineage from Beethoven to Czerny, and finally to Liszt. More than a portrait of social life, this work remains a profound historical record of the vibrant salon culture and creative spirit that defined Vienna’s Romantic era.
